Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I get started?
The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. It's a low-pressure call where we can get a sense of whether we're a good fit before committing to anything. From there, if it feels right, we schedule an intake appointment and go from there. You can book directly through the client portal or reach out via email at dr.elliegottstein@gmail.com.
What happens during the first session?
The first session is an intake. We spend the time getting to know each other, going over your history and background, and clarifying what you're hoping to get out of therapy. By the end, we'll have a clearer picture of your goals and a loose sense of how we'll work together. You don't need to have everything figured out before you show up.
Do you offer a free consultation?
Yes. I offer a free 15-minute video consultation for anyone considering therapy. It's a chance to ask questions, get a feel for my style, and decide if it's a good fit. No pressure and no commitment required. If we are not a good fit, I will likely recommend a different direction to help you find someone you feel comfortable with.
About Therapy
How does therapy work?
Therapy gives you a confidential space to understand what's getting in your way, figure out why, and build practical strategies to actually do something about it. Sessions with me are collaborative, you are the expert on you and I help you translate what you want into action. We identify patterns, set goals, and work toward them with evidence-based tools tailored to you. It's not just talking about your feelings (although we do that too), it's building skills you can actually use.
What issues can therapy help with?
I work with adults, adolescents, and college students dealing with anxiety, depression, stress, perfectionism, motivation, social anxiety, health concerns, and life transitions. I also specialize in sport psychology for athletes and have a particular focus on high-achievers who want practical, goal-oriented support. If you're unsure whether your concerns are a good fit, reach out and we can talk it through.
How long does therapy last?
It depends on your goals and what you're working on. Some people benefit from brief, focused work over a few months. Others prefer longer-term support as they navigate bigger patterns or ongoing challenges. We'll check in regularly on your progress and adjust the plan as needed. There's no set timeline for growth and everyone is different.
How often will we meet?
Most clients start with weekly sessions. This helps build momentum and establish a strong working relationship. As you make progress, we can move to every other week or a maintenance schedule based on what works best for you. Keep in mind, there are limited hours in the day, so when we reduce frequency, your preferred timeslot may be booked.
How long is each session?
Standard sessions are 45 minutes. Extended sessions are available upon request for an additional fee.
Fees and Insurance
What is the fee for a session?
For more specific fee information, please see the fees section. Extended sessions are available at a higher rate depending on length.
Do you accept insurance?
I am a private-pay practice and do not bill insurance directly. However, I can provide a monthly superbill, which is an itemized receipt you can submit to your insurance company for potential out-of-network reimbursement. Many clients are able to recover a portion of the cost this way. I'd recommend calling the member services number on your insurance card and asking about your out-of-network mental health benefits before we begin so that you have a clear picture of the costs and reimbursement.
Why private pay?
Working outside of insurance means a few things for you. Sessions are completely confidential and not shared with your insurance company. There's more flexibility in how we structure our work together, including session length and frequency. Insurance companies will not dictate the treatment you receive. For many clients, especially those who value privacy or want care that isn't dictated by insurance limits, private pay is the better fit.
What forms of payment do you accept?
Payment is due at the time of service. I accept all major credit cards, debit cards, and HSA or FSA cards.
Logistics
Is therapy in person or via telehealth?
All sessions are conducted via telehealth on a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You can attend from anywhere in Virginia or North Carolina. This means no commute, no waiting room, and no scheduling around traffic. All you need is a video-compatible device and an internet connection.
Where are you licensed?
I am a licensed clinical psychologist in both Virginia and North Carolina. I can only see clients who are physically located in one of those two states at the time of our sessions.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule. Cancellations made within that 24-hour window will be charged the full session fee. I understand that life happens, and I'll always do my best to find a solution if something unexpected comes up.
Still Have Questions?
If something isn't covered here, feel free to reach out at dr.elliegottstein@gmail.com or schedule a free 15-minute consultation. I'm happy to answer any questions before you commit to anything.
